Traditionally, marketing was a one-way communication from companies to customers and product information were provided through varied media – print, radio, television, billboards, public relations and direct marketing channels. The objective was to reach customers through one or more of these methods. With the advent of the internet, marketing was transformed because the limitations imposed by geographical factors were removed. The number of potential customers that a company can market its products had increased. Anybody could look for anything on the internet. Through blogging, a consumer can converse with the company and with other consumers on the net. Exchange of ideas can be achieved in the fastest way possible.

Who you really are and the image you project may not always be the same. In marketing, the client’s impression of you is critical in making a sale or closing a deal. You may have the best lines, but if your confidence is low, it will show in your body language, and the client can tell. The secret is keeping your posture on all occasions, especially when you are being rejected. Arguing shows insecurity. Staying calm and collected demonstrates confidence – in yourself and in your product.

You may not always make a sale or close a deal, but you can always keep the door of possibilities open by giving a good impression.

Tired of the monotony in your workplace? Try putting on some music. Over the years, studies have shown that music in the working environment improves productivity, keeps workers awake and alert, thus avoiding silly errors and accidents. The music’s rhythm has to be carefully chosen as to keep a beat that will help employees stay alert.

Having music in your workplace also lightens up one’s mood, relieving employees of unnecessary stress. It is most useful before going on a meeting, or a business presentation. It keeps your spirit up, leaving you with nothing else but positive energy to do your best for the day.

“Many of us are afraid to follow our passions, to pursue what we want most because it means taking risks and even facing failure. But to pursue your passion with all your heart and soul is success in itself. The greatest failure is to have never really tried.” –Robyn Allan, an economist and a dancer.

Robyn Allan was a successful economist in a major financial institution in Canada, she had a good family life, but felt that something else was missing. Dancing has always been her passion, but was not able to pursue it due to her other priorities. But she found a way to engage in dancing in her free time, and after a lot of struggles, she is now a producer, choreographer and performer for dance shows. She also became president and CEO of Canada’s largest insurer, and now is a president of her own company.

Pursuing your passion outside work helps you become more productive in other aspects of your life, and in your day job. It’s a balance between doing something for your company, and doing something for yourself.

Consumer wants are the basis of marketing strategy decisions and no strategy is given the go if it hasn’t passed consumer research.

Every aspect of a product to be offered is driven by consumer acceptance. They feel that there is no point in doing research and marketing a product that people will not buy. There are instances that products that were results of technological breakthroughs did not take off because the public didn’t like them.

Keep it short and sweet

Have you received a phone call where a certain product or service is being marketed? At first, you feel good to be considered a potential client. But once you decide to turn the offer down, the telemarketer does his tactics to keep you on the phone until you say yes. This turns the potential customer off, and the next telemarketing calls will no longer be entertained.

For telemarketers, keep your spiel short, possibly not exceeding one minute. This information may be supplemented by a brochure sent through fax, email or by snail mail. Customers usually pay more attention to brochures, as they read the items during their free time, when their minds are most relaxed. Deciding to sign up for a service over the phone usually result to customers canceling the contract in a few days or weeks.
